Acclaimed film composer and pianist Jean-Michel Bernard returns to the Coronet Theatre after composing the score for 2016’s ballet TERRA with an intimate concert of film music from his acclaimed albums Piano Cinema 1 and 2 as well as a tribute to Lalo Schifrin.

Piano Cinema is a saga in which Jean-Michel Bernard revisits the entire history of great film music in a resolutely original recreation of its finest themes engraved in our collective memory, from the 1950s to the present day. From Ennio Morricone to Hans Zimmer, via John Williams, Nino Rota, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, John Barry, Jean-Michel Bernard and many others. With a recognized talent as a film composer, and numerous master classes to his credit around the world, Jean-Michel Bernard will also share anecdotes and an insight into the mysterious creative process of film music in concert.

Jean-Michel Bernard, whom Ray Charles described as a “genius” and Lalo Schifrin called his “soul brother” works at the crossroads of musical genres. A composer, orchestrator, producer, concert pianist, he is not exactly a classical pianist, nor a jazz pianist (even if he has the improvisational freedom and swing), but is known as an exceptional pianist of music for cinema. Jean-Michel Bernard is the only official Steinway artist in the film music sector, and has worked as a member of Ray Charles’ Quartet, a collaborator of Scorsese and Morricone, and as a composer for Michel Gondry amongst others

Acclaimed film composer and pianist Jean-Michel Bernard returns to the Coronet Theatre with a tribute to acclaimed film composer Lalo Schifrin (Mission: Impossible, Bullitt, Dirty Harry).

Argentinian born pianist Lalo Schifrin is a conductor and composer who has written over 100 scores for both television & the cinema including the memorable themes to Mission: Impossible (1966), Mannix (1967), Starsky and Hutch (1975), Cool Hand Luke (1967), and Bullitt (1968). Schifrin has regularly worked alongside Clint Eastwood (another jazz music aficionado) on numerous contributions including the themes to all the Dirty Harry films. During his illustrious career, Schifrin has received four Grammy Awards, and six Oscar nominations.

Schifrin received his classical music training in both Argentina & France, and is a highly respected jazz pianist. On moving back to Buenos Aires in the mid 1950s, Schifrin formed his own big band, and was noticed by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, who asked him to become his pianist and arranger. In addition to his jazz and cinema compositions, he has conducted the London Philarmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philarmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and many others.
