Description:

«He stopped the Sun, moved the Earth…». – Although Nicolaus Copernicus is considered the greatest and most famous Polish scientist, his biography, the full picture of his achievements and versatility worthy of a Renaissance man are not widely known today. 550 years after the astronomer’s birth, invited artists and producers have restored his story to Polish pop culture, translating it into the language of a musical.

The libretto refers to the most important events in Copernicus’ life – from his studies in Cracow, Padua and Bologna, through his return to Frombork, his canonical ministry, his medical practice and astronomical research, his participation in the coronation of Sigismund the Old and the Prussian Homage, and finally the creation and publication of the five-book «De revolutionibus.» There will also be room for the thread of the scientist’s intellectual and emotional relationship with Anna Schilling. The authors of the show show the audience Nicolaus Copernicus – an outstanding astronomer, a great Pole, but also, simply, a man, open-minded and full of scientific passion. «We don’t want to take Copernicus off the pedestal. But we will let him put aside the astrolabe for a while and speak to us in a language that reaches minds and hearts,» the creators explain.

The libretto of the musical came from the hand of popular writer (and also neurologist) Ałbena Grabowska, author of, among other things, the historical saga «The Century of the Guilty,» adapted by Polish Television. The lyrics were written by Daniel Wyszogrodzki – translator and theatrical author, specialist in Polish and world musicals, lecturer at the Theater Academy in Warsaw. The music was written by Tomasz Szymuś – composer and arranger, lecturer at the Institute of Music at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The show’s choreography was developed by Jaroslaw Staniek and Katarzyna Zielonka. The set and light design was created by Grzegorz Policinski, while the performances were directed by Jakub Szydłowski. Musical direction of the production is by Tomasz Szymus.

Description:

The music for the film «Peasants» is created by Lukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski, a young composer and producer, winner of many awards. His projects, combining music with history, have gained recognition, realizing, among others, in cooperation with the Warsaw Uprising Museum, ECS, IPN, Pilecki Institute and many other institutions in Poland and around the world. Rostkowski creates a new form of multimedia historical lessons, combining art with education, music with comics and animation.

The soundtrack for the film «Peasants» is based on traditional Polish sounds and authentic folk instruments. Just as Reymont used simple peasant language to create a colorful verbal cathedral of the Baroque, Rostkowski aims to create beautiful film music based on authentic folk sounds of instruments, compositions and traditional themes. Modernity manifests itself only in the thinking about forms and arrangements. Most importantly, however, the project is a unique compendium of the most interesting phenomena of folk music, involving many musicians dedicated to the tradition, such as Maria Pomianowska, Song Laboratory, Sutari, Dagadana, Tęgie Chłopy, etc.

Folk and film compositions arranged for orchestras will be combined with paintings, animations and films, depicting several years of work on this unique project. The whole is expected to be an unforgettable spectacle, close to nature, just like the iconic and Nobel Prize-winning novel by Wladyslaw Reymont.
