This year marks independent worldwide celebrations including two of the most important composers of our time: Wojciech Kilar and Philip Glass. The year 2022 marks the 90^th birthday of composer Wojciech Kilar (1932-2013). Kilar, one of Poland’s most important composers, had a creative life spanning over 50 years and lent his talent to three areas of composition: film music, concert music, and sacred music.

It is on the occasion of this festive year that we celebrate both Kilar’s distinct musical language and varied activity, but also the work of his counterpart, the American composer Philip Glass (b. 1937) who celebrates his 85^th birthday in 2022. Philip Glass’s music has infiltrated the imaginations of millions of people through his work in every conceivable field – from dozens of large film scores (three Oscar nominations) to a staggering body of work, including symphonies, concertos, operas and piano works.

Glass and Kilar are connected as model examples of composers at the intersection of art and commerce which might be the central artistic issue of our time. We will have the chance to hear the unmistakable individual musical voices of both composers who maintained their creative integrity whether writing symphonies or film scores, masses or concertos.

Scoring4Polish Directors as a tribute to the outstanding Polish director – Jerzy Skolimowski.

After concerts with music to the films of Agnieszka Holland, Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polański and Krzysztof Zanussi, we will pay tribute to another legend of Polish cinema, award-winning director Jerzy Skolimowski, honoured in Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

In keeping with tradition, in the first part of the Scoring4Polish Directors concert we will hear music created for the recent Polish premieres. We invited great artists who have prepared suites specially commissioned by the FMF.

In the second part of the concert, we will hear motifs and songs from Skolimowski’s cult films. There will be jazz, dark contemporary sounds and poignant songs. We will welcome to the stage a friend of the director – Tomasz Organek.

During the concert, the Polish Soundtrack of the Year award will be presented – for the best soundtrack of 2021 created for a Polish production.

The concert is intended for viewers over the age of 16.

We are facing one of the most difficult moments in our modern history. We strongly believe that the festival’s duty is to appreciate and highlight both Ukrainian heroism and tremendous selfless help provided by people from all over the world. As always, we want to do it side by side with our partners, creating a united and powerful statement among the film music composers.

There are over 2 million refugees in Poland, many artists among them, including musicians from Kyiv, Lviv and Kharkiv, who are looking for a place to work. That is why the choir and orchestra performing the concert will be composed of, among others, Ukrainian musicians. They will perform works composed or dedicated specially for this occasion by the composers associated with FMF including: John Williams, Howard Shore, Lolita Ritmanis, Laura Karpman, Elliot Goldenthal, Diego Navarro, Trevor Morris, Don Davis, Craig Armstrong, Stephen Warbeck, Dirk Brossé, Benjamin Wallfisch and Michael Giacchino.

Let this year’s edition of FMF be a demonstration of solidarity!

Słowińska | AUKSO | Konieczny is a tribute to Zygmunt Konieczny – not only the creator of the Polish literary song genre but also an outstanding Kraków film music composer. Konieczny is the creator of music for over a hundred feature, television, documentary and short films. He has composed music to the works of directors, such as Jan Jakub Kolski, Andrzej Wajda and Tadeusz Konwicki. He has been awarded both the Polish Film Award and the Polish Film Festival Award three times.

The concert is also a premiere and promotion of the live album Słowińska–AUKSO–Konieczny, recorded with the same line-up in the concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice. In terms of repertoire, the concert is a summation of Konieczny’s compositional achievements; the composer dedicated some of his works to the soloist Joanna Słowińska (including solo parts of the cantata form Serce moje gram to texts by Stanisław Wyspiański), other are known from the repertoire of Ewa Demarczyk or composed for films (Jańcio Wodnik) and theatre plays (Noc listopadowa). There are also compositions to texts by outstanding poets (Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, Julian Tuwim, Miron Białoszewski, Wojciech Młynarski, Agnieszka Osiecka and others), which define the rank and canon of the literary song genre.

John Powell is the main figure of this year’s FMF and the man of the hour of the monographic concert.

After two years of the pandemic, a long-awaited monographic review of John Powell’s work will be heard at ICE Kraków. The composer will play the role of the host of the evening, commenting and sharing anecdotes related to the performed suites with the audience.

FMF fans will be able to experience a full monographic concert of the scores by the composer awaited in Kraków for years. John Powell is well known especially for scoring animations (such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Happy Feet) as well as action films (The Italian Job, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Ultimatum, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, X-Men: The Last Stand). The British composer – who received multiple Oscar, Grammy and BAFTA nominations, and has been a long-time collaborator of Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson‑Williams – accepted the invitation of the festival and will personally choose themes and prepare suites that will be presented during the concert. The concert will be enriched by both presence and performance of special guests and the musicians will be conducted by Powell’s friend – Gavin Greenaway, known to the audience from the previous editions of the FMF.

The partner of the concert is the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) that has collaborated with the festival for years.

FMF4Kids: How to Train Your Dragon – Live in Concert

The final evening of the 15^th FMF will be a real icing on the festival cake with the screening of the first part of the box-office hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon – live to picture. The film takes place in the world of Vikings and wild dragons and has been nominated for, among others, two Oscars (including one for best music for John Powell), a Golden Globe and two BAFTA awards.
