With the Christmas season around the corner, today’s news keeps a direct relation with the most wonderful time of the year. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Christmas song “Silent Night”, the Salzburg State Theatre has commissioned film composer John Debney to create a contemporary and essential play entitled “Meine Stille Nacht” (“My Silent Night”).

This musical play is no historical account of the creation of the song, but a contemporary story inspired by the song’s powerful message of peace, describing the days leading up to Christmas from the individual perspectives of its eight protagonists.  It is a modern tale about the eternal competition between innovation and tradition, as well as alternative forms of family life.

The musical play, which had a preview function yesterday, will have its world premiere today, Saturday, November 24th – 7 pm, at the Salzburger Landestheater in Salzburg (Austria), which will be followed by 11 more functions in the following weeks till December 18th (tickets 34-85€).

With music composed by John Debney, book by Hannah Friedman Lyrics by Siedah Garrett, Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, the play is based on an idea by Richard Kraft, having German translation by Ruth and Johannes Deny.
