World-renown composer Hans Zimmer has bought BBC’s legendary recording studios Maida Vale, located in North-West London, for a total of £10.5 million (12.2 M€ / $ 13.38 million).

Originally built as the Maida Vale Roller Skating Palace and Club in 1909, the complex hosts seven sound studios and has been used to record thousands of classical music, popular music, and drama sessions for the BBC from 1946 to 2018 when the BBC announced the intention to relocate to purpose-built music recording and rehearsal studios in Stratford.

Maida Vale has been the home of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 1934, and its main Studio (MV1) is one of the largest in the UK with room for an orchestra of over 150 musicians and an audience of over 200.

The Beatles used studio MV5 several times in 1963 to record sessions for BBC Radio. Artists including Jimi Hendrix, Beyoncé, and Radiohead have also performed there, while Bing Crosby made his last recordings in the building.

Sources suggest that Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will these studios as a British base in which to write and record major film scores, expanding his company from its current home in Santa Monica, California.
