“The ASA is thrilled to welcome back Kris Bowers as our guest, to discuss his magnificent score to The Wild Robot. Kris was last with us when he spoke about scoring The Green Book, and since then he has picked up a few more accolades (not that we needed confirmation of his talents).

Kris won a Daytime Emmy for the Amazon TV movie The Snowy Day and has been nominated for additional Primetime Emmys for his scores to When They See Us, Mrs. America and Bridgerton. He also picked up an Academy Award for co-directing The Last Repair Shop, and an additional nomination for A Concerto is a Conversation.

Kris continues to work on a wide variety of films, television shows and games, including the hit Netflix Shonda Rhimes show Bridgerton, The Color Purple (produced by Steven Spielberg), Chevalier, and several games in the Madden franchise. He also performs and records as an acclaimed jazz pianist.

We’ll ask Kris about how John Williams’ Star Wars scores influenced his action writing for The Wild Robot, and take an in depth look at some of the cues, including his use of unusual percussion instruments.”

It was a very insightful event since Kris Bowers shared his process of creation of the music. He said that in order to create the sound of wilderness he contacted The Sandbox Percussion group who played different percussive sets. These included teacups, chromatically tuned glass bottles, planks of wood and cowbells. He avoided using instruments associated with some cultures. He also used some synth sounds combined with orchestral sounds.

Afterwards, he made emphasis on the circumstance that the feelings of the music were very important for the film. In fact, he composed the main themes using the piano trying to get the emotion of each moment. The “migration sequence” is an example of the importance of getting the right feelings with the music. Furthermore, he explained his workflow with his team, how they organized cue lists, Logic Sessions and scores in a very efficient way. An event worth attending for a score worth listening and enjoying!!
