The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has presented the 2017 SAMURAI Award to acclaimed film composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor), winner of BAFTA and Oscar Awards for his film music.

The SAMURAI Award, now in its fourth year, commends achievements by veteran filmmakers and creators who continue to create groundbreaking work that carves paths to a new era in cinema. Past recipients of this award were: Takeshi Kitano & Tim Burton in 2014, Yoji Yamada & John Woo in 2015 and Martin Scorsese & Kiyoshi Kurosawa in 2016.

Today November 1st – 3:00 p.m. at Tower Hall, Roppongi Academy Hills (Tokio), Ryuichi Sakamoto will offer a conference aimed at young film fans and next-generation filmmakers, talking about his career and approach to scoring for the screen.

Following at 5:30 p.m., the documentary “Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA” directed by Stephen Nomura Schible on the figure of the Japanese composer, will be screened at Toho Cinemas – Roppongi Hills (Tokio).
