For 25 years, the 21st Century Orchestra has dedicated itself to the entire spectrum of film music and has made a name for itself not only as a permanent fixture at the KKL Luzern, but also from New York, London, and Paris to Dubai. Since its foundation in 1999, over a hundred musicians have been committed to the idea of bringing film music into the concert hall. Touching sounds from early silent films to rousing melodies from contemporary Hollywood hits are the credo and passion of the 21st Century Orchestra, which has been under the direction of conductor Ludwig Wicki from the very beginning.

The orchestra’s professionalism and versatility inspire the most sought-after film music composers and industry experts: Oscar winners such as Michael Giacchino (“Star Trek”, “Ratatouille”), Ludovic Bource (“The Artist”) and Howard Shore (“The Lord of the Rings”) work closely with the Lucerne orchestra time and again. The orchestra can look back on numerous world premieres – unforgettable: Howard Shore’s breathtaking symphony for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

In this anniversary season, the 21st Century Orchestra will be bringing the work ‘The Lord of the Rings Symphony’ back to the KKL stage for the first time in over 10 years. “I would like to thank Ludwig Wicki for his masterful approach to bringing this score to life,” says Howard Shore. A festive and gripping anniversary concert that will transform Lucerne’s large concert hall into a symphonic setting of Middle-earth and captivate more than just film fans.

Howard Shore organized the compositions for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy into a six-movement symphony for symphony orchestra and chorus. Each phrase represents different key moments and emotional events in the epic narrative. Using thematic motifs that symbolize specific characters, locations and important plot lines, the music offers a deep immersion into the world of Middle-earth.

The symphony is performed by a large orchestra and choir, including children’s choir and soloists, reflecting the diversity and scope of Shore’s original score. The performance of “The Lord of the Rings-Symphony” is not just a concert, but a comprehensive cultural event that deeply touches the audience with its majestic music and powerful retelling of the legendary story. NOTE: Concert performance, without a screen.
