‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in Concert (13/1 & 3/2/2023)

Following its highly acclaimed live world premiere in 2018 (read more), the KKL Luzern will host once again “How to Train Your Dragon” in concert. Experience the magic of this heartwarming 2010 masterpiece in HD on the big screen (film in English, with German subtitles), while John Powell‘s score is integrally performed live by the City Light Symphony Orchestra and its vocal ensemble, London Voices, led by Kevin Griffiths.

John Powell‘s versatile score, marked by Scottish musical color, accompanies the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless with strong musical themes. Powell masterfully weaves these into thunderous action, flaring romance, and lighthearted humor, resulting in a stirring, large-orchestral score.

Spotlight On John Powell (4/2/2023)

Over the years, British composer John Powell has developed an orchestral style all his own – very melodic and harmonic, with skillful use of rhythms, percussion, and synth textures, and colorful, dense orchestration. The full-length program of the concert “Spotlight on John Powell” is dedicated to this versatility. He redefined action sound with his pulsating rhythms for the “Bourne” agent films, Scottish musical color accompanies the Vikings in “How to Train Your Dragon”, Spanish flair and Brazilian dance rhythms resound in “Ferdinand” and “Rio”.

Following the live world premiere of “How to Train Your Dragon” in 2018, the 90-piece City Light Symphony Orchestra and its vocal ensemble are pleased and honored to once again collaborate with John Powell, on an exclusive concert conducted by Kevin Griffiths at the KKL Luzern, with composer John Powell in attendance and the participation of soprano Holly Sedillos.

The program will be as follows:

  • Suite from «Rat Race»
  • Lando’s Closet from «Solo: A Star Wars Story»
  • Building the Crate from «Chicken Run»
  • Love Theme from «Two Weeks Notice»
  • Suite from «The Call of the Wild»
  • The Joke is Told from «An Englishman, A Frenchman & A Irishman»
  • Suite from «Ferdinand»

INTERMISSION

  • Main Title from «The Bourne Identity»
  • Mine Mission Suite from «Solo: A Star Wars Story»
  • Suite from «Pan»
  • Suite from «Ice Age: The Meltdown»
