“Hosted online and in-person on the campuses of Capitol Studios and Fox Studios, this LAFCI course is a six-day workshop addressing the demands of the modern media composer, focusing on the key elements of composition and baton technique, in addition to body movement, orchestration, working with click track, punches and streamers, score and part preparation, variable clicks, film music history, and more.  Not only will fellows have the opportunity to study and conduct great repertoire but each chosen fellow will prepare their own cue to conduct and record with the 45-piece Hollywood Studio Symphony on the final day.  For those unable to attend in-person, an online option is being made available with a faculty member recording your cue.

This workshop will focus heavily on composition with each participant under the direct supervision of faculty member William Ross, including three (3) one-on-one composition sessions leading up to the in-person portion of The Intensive.  Each session is designed for the participant to expand upon previous sessions and classes and to be able to apply learned knowledge to the culminating event of conducting their own composition.  Each conductor will be allocated 15 minutes of podium time for each session and will have all sessions recorded.  This workshop will be limited to 13 fellows and no more than 7 auditors.  Instrumentation for the final session will be 1111 3330  2perc + harp + piano + strings (8/6/6/6/2) with standard woodwind doublings and a basic orchestral percussion setup (detailed percussion list to be made available at a later date).

LAFCI is committed to providing a safe environment for all to learn and work and will abide by all COVID safety protocols as required by both the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the respective studios. At this time, vaccinations are highly recommended but not required, however all participants will have to provide proof of a negative COVID PCR test result at the time of the in-person portion of the workshop.

Acceptance into the workshop will be determined primarily upon the quality of compositional skill as demonstrated through submission of notated score and audio mock-up.  For score formatting recommendations, please review the LAFCI Part/Score Formatting Recommendations article in the Resource Center page.  Submission deadline is October 1.
