Trilhas Curtas' album launch concert puts short film music in the spotlight

According to João Batista Melo, creator and producer of the project, “Trilhas Curtas” was created with the intention of preserving and disseminating music composed for short films. Despite the great and growing public interest in the soundtrack genre, there are relatively few events and projects aimed at film music in Brazil. The situation is aggravated in the case of short films, as the format itself has difficulty circulating, and not only in Brazil.

Melo points out that, in fifty years as a collector of soundtracks, he only knows of the existence of a single series of three CDs with collections of short film soundtracks, produced a few years ago by the Swede Mikael Carlsson for the Spanish label Quartet Records, and he is unaware of the existence of any concerts focused exclusively on short films. Thus, “Trilhas Curtas” is one of the first albums and one of the first concerts, worldwide, directed exclusively to short film soundtracks.

One of the works chosen for the repertoire was the music for the short film “A Quem Possa Interessar”, directed by João Batista Melo in 1980, which was until now the only work of the genre composed by the renowned Brazilian composer Celso Adolfo. The 16 mm film prints are in a state of deterioration and the magnetic tapes with the music no longer exist. Thus, the music survived more than forty years since the production of the film only on an old cassette tape, which was recently transferred to mp3 format, which now made possible a new arrangement made by Tulio Mourão, who also plays the piano in the theme and will be at the release concert.

In addition to renowned soloists such as Juarez Moreira, Nivaldo Ornelas, or the Senegalese Manour Ba, the project features eight members of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most respected Brazilian orchestras.

Trilhas Curtas” was selected in a national call by Funarte, a governmental institution supporting artistic production and circulation.
