FIMUCITÉ 17 – Fimucité Film Scoring Academy

The 17th edition of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival – FIMUCITÉ, (June 30 to July 15, 2023), has announced the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy, to be held from Monday, July 10 to Saturday, July 15.

Coordinated by Pedro J. Mérida, the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy is one of the most anticipated parallel activities of the festival, which is deployed annually in the festival’s commitment to specialized training in this field and offers a unique opportunity to students and professional musicians interested in creating music for the audiovisual. Audiovisual composers, music producers, arrangers, music software developers, sound engineers, percussionists, streamers, and even film producers and directors, video game developers, 2D and 3D animators, animation scriptwriters and young people with musical and audiovisual interests are part of the target audience of the various training modules.

 

The line-up of speakers includes such prominent composers as Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor); award-winning composer and arranger for film, games, and contemporary music Jan Sanejko; BAFTA award-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd (‘Assassin’s Creed’, ‘Hitman’); orchestrator and arranger Benoit Grey; drummer Greg Ellis, one of the most sought-after professionals in the post-production phase of big-budget cinematographic works; Grammy and Emmy Award winner Lolita Ritmanis and her colleagues in the Dynamic Music Partners label Michael McCuistion and Kristopher Carter; the expert in sound techniques in the field of streaming Sara López; and several guest composers attached to Musimagen.

 

The registration period is now open for this new edition of the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy, which includes an outstanding program of free master classes and round tables, with limited seating capacity, to be held in the multipurpose room of the Science and Technology Park of Tenerife, located in Las Mantecas (La Laguna) and in the Auditorium of the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

MONDAY July 10 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

12:00 a 14:00 – “Sound Data Programmed in Contemporary Synchronism: Symbiotic Creations from Electronics”

  • Taught by Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor) and Jan Sanejko
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, software developers, music software developers, music producers, music arrangers.
  • Synopsis: Electronic creator Juno Reactor offers us, in this masterclass, the way in which the mechanisms of a recording studio can update the symphonic sounds of contemporary composers to a language that uses modern techniques and technological applications to recreate this type of sounds for new audiences. The reinterpretation through modern sound software treatments of the ‘Electronic Penderecki’ project, developed in collaboration with Polish orchestrator Jan Sanejko, will be used as the basis for this masterclass.

 

17:00 a 19:00 – “Creating and Producing an Orchestral/Choral Score for Video Games: From Conception to Recording, Live Concerts, and Beyond”

  • Taught by Jesper Kyd and Benoit Grey.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, video game developers, 2D animators, 3D animators, musical arrangers.
  • Synopsis: BAFTA-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Borderlands, Warhammer Darktide, Hitman) discusses his creative process in composing music for blockbuster video games. Jesper’s guest for this masterclass is Benoit Gray (orchestrator and arranger of hundreds of film, video game and television scores), who will discuss the process of orchestrating Jesper’s music for live orchestra and choir.

 

TUESDAY July 11 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

17:00 a 19:00 – “Workshop of Acoustic Percussion in a World of Samples and Loops”

  • Taught by Greg Ellis.
  • Workshop target audiences: Sound engineers, percussionists, composers, music arrangers, music producers.
  • Synopsis: Greg Ellis, one of the most in-demand professionals in the post-production phase of big-budget films, will offer a practical session on how acoustic percussion continues to be one of the decisive factors in providing narrative rhythm to cinematographic sequences in large-format productions. Although the industry is increasingly turning to samples and loops, Ellis will focus this module on the use of acoustic percussion in film and video game scores, unraveling the most versatile application routes.

 

WEDNESDAY July 12 (Auditorio de CajaCanarias)

12:00 a 14:00 – “Live Sound Creation through New Streaming Platforms”

  • Taught by Sara López.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Streamers, audiovisual composers, video game developers, music producers, young audiences with musical and audiovisual curiosity.
  • Synopsis: In this training module, the expert in sound techniques in the field of streaming Sara López offers a journey through creative development using electronic software applied to digital instrumentation during a live broadcast through streaming platforms.

 

WEDNESDAY July 12 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

17:00 a 19:00 – “The Development of Digital Mockups. Miniatures that Build Digital Sound Architecture”

  • Taught by Lolita Ritmanis.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, music producers, music software developers, film directors, film producers, sound engineers.
  • Synopsis: Grammy® and Emmy® Award winner Lolita Ritmanis, one of the founders of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, and a leading creator in composition for media, offers, in this module, her process for creating sound palettes, either for an orchestral score, a score based on sound design, or a hybrid score based on the needs of the project or story. How do you choose the “sound” of a score? Lolita will discuss both narrative films and animation projects, sharing scenes without music and then with music, as well as sample scores, walking you through her process from screenplay/storyboard to final film mix.

 

THURSDAY July 13 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

17:00 a 19:00 – “AI in the Audiovisual Industry”

  • Taught by 3Doubles Producciones.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: 2D animators, 3D animators, film producers, film directors, animation screenwriters, audiovisual composers.
  • Synopsis: In this masterclass, we will discuss the Artificial Intelligence programme being created currently at 3Doubles Producciones, which affects the rendering and previz departments, focussing on neuronal networks and the way in which this project has taken shape. We will also talk about ethics and how this can affect work in the future.

 

FRIDAY July 14 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

12:00 a 14:00 – “The Technical Musical Script. The Adaptation of the Finished Musical Work from Digital Animatics”

  • Taught by Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion & Kristopher Carter.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, music producers, film directors, animation scriptwriters, film producers, 2D animators, 3D animators.
  • Synopsis: The trio of experts in film animation in its music division, known as Dynamic Music Partners, offer, in this training module, the keys for building up from the most modern musical sound techniques using simple animatics as a starting point. The data management process will be detailed, from the reception of the raw materials to the digital mastering process of pieces that results in the assembly of a technical script on which the synchronized recordings for the final result will later be built.

 

SATURDAY July 15 (Sala multipropósito Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife)

12:00 a 14:00 – “The Set Up of the Professional Studio. Being at the Technological Forefront to Ensure Professional Continuity”

  • The table will be composed by winners of the 6th edition of the Spanish Audiovisual Music Awards: Pablo Cervantes, Manel Gil-Inglada, Dani Trujillo, and Iván Palomares. With the participation of Ana Vázquez Silva (president of Musimagen) and Mónica Menéndez (vice-president of Musimagen). Moderator: Gorka Oteiza (SoundTrackFest).
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, music producers, film producers, film directors, sound engineers.
  • Synopsis: This training module, in the form of a round table, will have prominent speakers attached to Musimagen address the reality of how the national industry faces the challenges of competing at a technological level with the industries of other European countries, India or North America, without losing sight of the work system of the growing industry in China. In this case, a comparison will be offered of how the different currents of technological application to the musical field offer competitive variants.

 

15:30 to 17:30 – “Advances in creative studio technology. Next Generation Symphonic Software Ally or Enemy?”

  • Taught by Tyler Bates.
  • Target audience of the Masterclass: Audiovisual composers, music producers, film producers, film directors, sound engineers.
  • Synopsis: The sound software has taken an importance when working symphonic creations that are used for synchronization during the post-production processes in the field of animation, video games and film. Tyler Bates will unravel in the development of this training module, a real comparative on how the use of databases programmed in sound form has effectively replaced studio recording with real instruments, analyzing the pros and cons of this trend and how it affects in different ways the final technical result of a production.
