Presented with support from the Cincinnati Jewish Bicentennial, CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher conducts Ensemble intercontemporain in Olga Neuwirth’s newly composed score to accompany Hans Karl Breslauer’s silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden (“The City without Jews”).
Released in 1924, the film was intended to be a satire/social commentary on the antisemitic political and cultural movement of the 1920s, but today it serves as a shockingly visionary look at the fear of multiculturalism and the normalization of antisemitism more than a decade before The Holocaust. Neuwirth’s score is an interconnected web of sound and image that draws the audience into a nearly 100-year-old world.
