2023-05-09 – 19:25 h

The 2023 Passages Transfestival has programmed two film music concerts in Metz, France, performed by the Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est conducted by Ernst van Tiel, dedicated to the music of Nino Rota & Ennio Morricone.

Friday, 12/5/2023 – 20h – De Nino Rota à Ennio Morricone (Grande Salle – Arsenal, Metz)

Nino Rota’s music belongs to Federico Fellini as Ennio Morricone’s to Sergio Leone. But these scores belong to all of us: whether or not we know these films and those of Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) or Roberto Benigni (La vita è bella), their soundtracks are in our heads. The trumpet of La Strada, the harmonica of Once Upon a Time in the West, the oboe of Brother Gabriel in Mission are among the greatest strokes of genius in the history of cinema. These unforgettable film scores are offered to us as part of a Passages Transfestival dedicated this year to Italy.

Saturday, 13/5/2023 – 16h – Il était une fois dans l’Ouest (Grande Salle – Arsenal, Metz)

Italians don’t like the expression “spaghetti western”, which they consider pejorative, and prefer “Italian western”. However, it is synonymous with unshaven but endearing anti-heroes, and with a lyricism that reminds us that Italy is the home of opera. It also evokes one of the most brilliant pairs in the history of cinema, a pair that is purely “made in Rome”: the filmmaker Sergio Leone and his musical alter ego, Ennio Morricone. A comedian will be on hand to put these mythical tunes into context, but they are so evocative that everyone’s imagination will easily wander into the vast spaces of the Wild West.

NOTE: An adapted version, in 1 hour, of the previous day’s concert. This concert offers a dive into the work of Ennio Morricone for only 10 €. Family concert, accessible from 7 years old.

Program (1h):

  • Ennio Morricone
    • Once upon a time in the West (Man with a Harmonica / Theme)
    • Once upon a time in America (Deborah’s Theme)
    • The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
    • Le Clan des Siciliens
    • Chi mai
