Film music concerts at SACO 2019 festival

The Audiovisual Week of Oviedo (SACO – Semana del Audiovisual de Oviedo), which brings together various artistic disciplines linked to the film world, is having its 5th edition from March 8th to 17th, 2019 in Oviedo (Asturias, Spain).

 

Let’s highlight some of the remarkable events related to film music in the festival:

On Sunday 10th of March 10 at 20:30h, the film ‘The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1920)’ was screened at the Teatro Campoamor with live music by the Cabinet Quartet for this master piece of German Expressionism, being one of the most influential titles in the history of cinema. Cabinet Quartet is formed by Carlos Chiarelli (bassoon), César Latorre (piano, keyboards), Yoel Molina (electric guitar, effects) and Pier Bruera (drums, effects).

SACO 2019 - Dr Caligari

 

On Wednesday 12th of March at 20:30h, the silent film ‘Sherlock Jr (1924)’ by the glorious Buster Keaton was screened at the Teatro Campoamor, with live music by the pianist and composer Jordi Sabatés, accompanied by the tap dance and percussion group Camut Band.

SACO 2019 - Buster Keaton

 

On Friday 15th of March at 22:30h, the show ‘CROSSROADS: A Silent Movie with Live Music’ will take place at the Teatro Filarmónica, which will consist of the screening of the silent film CROSSROADS directed by Danielle de Picciotto and composed of images of her pilgrimage around the world, accompanied by live music by Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto. A different experience, full of existentialist and acoustic soundscapes.

SACO 2019 - Crossroads

 

On Saturday 16th of March at 20:30h, the movie ‘The Wizard of Oz (1939)’ will be screened at the Teatro Campoamor with its soundtrack, created by Herbert Stothart, E.Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen, performed live by Oviedo Filarmonía under the baton of Lucas Macías. In this way, a special tribute to this classic film in its 80th anniversary will be paid.

SACO 2019 - The Wizard of Oz

 

On March 20, 21 and 22 at 10:00 and 11:30h, the school activity ‘Musicando Cine’ will take place at the Teatro Filarmónica, where the Oviedo Filarmonía conducted by Rubén Diez, will offer a didactic program that combines movie images with their soundtracks.

This program, created by Javier Irigoien and premiered by the BOS in Bilbao in 2017, will include a selection of works by composer Fernando Velázquez (A monster calls, The Impossible, Zip and Zap and Captain’s Island, and Zip and Zap and the Marble Gang), in addition to the main theme of The Magnificent Seven by Elmer Bernstein, and the piece Musicando composed by Fernando Velázquez as a soundtrack for a series of scenes presented in 41 illustrations by Mª José Llorente, all with the narration of the actor Felix Corcuera.
