Film music concerts at SACO 2023 festival

Here is a summary of the film-concerts that make up the festival:

MARCH 10 | TEATRO CAMPOAMOR | 20:00 – NIÑO DE ELCHE SINGS THE SILENT MOVIES

Belonging to the surrealist avant-garde movement, the two films in this session also share a characteristic: the collaboration between a director and an artist. In the case of La Coquille et le Clergyman, the poet Antonin Artaud, and in Un perro andaluz, the painter Salvador Dalí, crucial to the aesthetics of Buñuel’s film, contributing a great plastic charge. SACO’s premiere production also features the art of Niño de Elche.

Absolute premiere. Curated and produced by SACO with the participation of Filmoteca Española.

Free admission after collecting an invitation at the Teatro Campoamor box office and at www.oviedo.es from March 8.

MARCH 11 & 12 | PLAZA DE PORLIER | 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, 20:00 – FRANCIS’ TENT

20′ | Show for all audiences | Premiere | Free admission until full capacity is reached.

A magical space in the Plaza de Porlier where the famous Francis Lumière presents to the world the great family discovery. The first images recorded with a new device known as cinematograph. Ten short films reflecting real life. Ten short films that were the beginning of everything. Of everything that has to do with cinema. Francis is passionate about it and will tell the SACO audience all the details, of the day, of the light, of the photo, of the protagonists. …. And all to the rhythm of jazz.

Short films: La sortie de l’usine Lumière a Lyon, La voltige, La Pêche aux poissons rouges, Le Débarquement du Congrès de Photografie à Lyon, Les Forgerons, L’Arroseur arrosé, Le repàs, Le Saut a la couverture, La Place des Cordeliers à Lyon and La mer.

MARCH 11 | TEATRO CAMPOAMOR | 20.00 – PLENA PAUSA: A PROJECT FOR THE MUSICALIZATION OF IVÁN ZULUETA’S FILM LEGACY, BY J

J of Los Planetas has wanted to give new life to a film material of Iván Zulueta rescued by the Filmoteca Española by acquiring “one of the most powerful personal archives in the cinematographic context of the second half of the twentieth century”. The musician from Granada has immersed himself in the filmography shot by Zulueta between the sixties and the seventies, which is not limited to the still transgressive Arrebato (1980) but abounds in spontaneous Super 8 films.  He has also reviewed personal documents, his drawings and polaroids, testimonies of his escapades to Berlin and New York, Morocco and Ibiza. Stamps of a life lived without concessions that we will be able to see and hear in Oviedo after its premiere last January in Madrid.

Free admission after collecting an invitation at the Teatro Campoamor box office and at www.oviedo.es from March 9.

16 DE MARZO | AUDITORIO PRÍNCIPE FELIPE | 20.00 – THE ADVENTURES OF MISTER JULES

Spanish Brass & Albert Guinovart | Videocreations: Cristina Busto

SACO joins the Ciclo Interdisciplinar de Música de Cámara de Oviedo (CIMCO) to present Les Aventures de Monsieur Jules, a work by pianist and composer Albert Guinovart in six movements for brass quintet and piano. Each of the movements is inspired by one of the different novels of the brilliant French writer Jules Verne. As the plot of most of these novels is part of the collective imagination, Guinovart created a suggestive music for each title. Together with the composer himself at the piano, will perform the brass quintet Spanish Brass, National Music Award 2020, and undisputed benchmark of music for this group in Spain. The visual artist Cristina Busto is the creator of the animations for each movement.

MARCH 17 | TEATRO CAMPOAMOR | 20:00 – SINGING IN THE RAIN BY OVIEDO FILARMONÍA

The transition from silent to talkies in Hollywood at the end of the 1920s, the fame and the conflicts experienced by the stars of the time served Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly to create one of the greatest musicals that cinema has ever produced. Splendorous, funny, and entertaining, the film stars the charismatic Gene Kelly, the sympathetic Donald O’Connor and a stupendous Debbie Reynolds in one of her first film roles. The soundtrack treasures wonders like the mythical Singin’ in the Rain and other songs as funny as Make ‘Em Laugh, Good Morning or Moses Supposes. Curiously, the BSO of Singin’ in the Rain was not nominated for an Oscar, although its orchestration was, which finally did not win the golden statuette. A unique soundtrack that SACO audiences will enjoy live at the Campoamor, with Oviedo Filarmonía conducted by the British maestro Timothy Henty. Presented by Alejandro G. Villalibre

Performed by chamber groups of students from the conservatory, the event is the first collaboration between SACO and the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Principado de Asturias.
