ISFMF 2018 festival – Full program

As we announced this week by advancing the first wave of guests exclusively in SoundTrackFest (read news), the Croatian International Sound & Film Music Festival (ISFMF) that will be celebrated from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st of October 2018 in Pula, continues working hard on this year’s edition and now brings us the full official program.

FRIDAY 19/10/2018 – SCREENINGS & CONFERENCES & FILMUSIC Lounge

13:30h – 14:25h – IN THE TRACKS OF ALEXANDRE DESPLAT | Film Screening

Alexandre Desplat is one of the most famous film music composer of today. An innovative artist with a singular expression, he is the successor of French masters of film music: Georges Delerue, Antoine Duhamel, Maurice Jarre. Writing music for film gathers his two passions: music and cinema. Between working sessions, confidences, films and personal archives, Alexandre Desplat offers, through this documentary, a great insight into the creative process and today’s cinema.

 

14:30h – 15:30h – MUSIC: THE INVISIBLE ACTOR | Richard Bellis | Master Class

Ever since the birth of cinema in the late 19th Century, music had a pivotal role in the art of film – from the early beginnings with pianists on stage during the screenings, across the big symphony orchestra scores, to experimental use of the sound. Emmy Award-winning composer Richard Bellis will give a master class of how exactly music works within a film.

 

16:00h – 17:00h – PSYCHOANALYSIS OF MUSIC | Željka Matijašević | Master Class

While the ‘Music: The Invisible Actor’ master class perfectly explains how the music works technically and artistically, ‘Psychoanalysis of Music’ digs deeper, exploring the vast area of human mind, connecting the dots between conscious and subconscious, creativity and psychology, explained by the most respected Croatian expert in the field of psychoanalysis and human sciences, with a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, Željka Matijašević.

 

17:15h – SCORE: A FILM MUSIC DOCUMENTARY | Film Screening

This award-winning documentary brings Hollywood’s premier composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world’s most widely known music genre: the film score.

SATURDAY 20/10/2018 – CONFERENCES & CAMILLE AWARDS GALA (ECSA)

11:00h – 12:00h – MUSIC AND SUBCONSCIOUS IMAGERY | Helena Dukić | Master Class

A piece of music might make us think of a certain scene, a person or even remind us of a particular event or action. Why is this so? Does music trigger our emotions first or does it invoke subconscious images that bring the emotional content with them? New research results show us which particular music features induce specific imagery types in listeners and what happens when the features start changing within a piece. Master Class by Helena Dukic – doctoral student and researcher at the University of Graz.

 

12:30h – 13:15h – …MUSIC, CAMERA, ACTION! (THE DIRECTOR/COMPOSER RELATIONSHIP) | Stefan Ruzowitzky, Richard Bellis, Gary Marlowe (mod) | Panel

Steven Spielberg and John Williams. Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer. James Cameron and James Horner… Relationships between directors and composers are one of the most important links during the process of filmmaking. Oscar-winning director Stefan Ruzowitzky will give a matchless survey from a filmmaker’s perspective and, along with prolific composers Gary Marlowe and Richard Bellis, will provide many examples of their own experience in working with other directors/composers.

 

13:20h – 14:00h – SCORING BLOCKBUSTERS AND SUPERHEROES vs INDEPENDENT ARTHOUSE | Rupert Gregson-Williams | Panel

How different is scoring a huge blockbuster like Wonder Woman or a small independent film? Do genres affect the creativity, relationship with directors/producers? Is scoring a TV show different to film? Emmy Award-nominated composer Rupert Gregson-Williams is perfect to answer those questions, because he did all of it!

 

14:30h – 15:30h – THE HORIZONS OF FILM MUSIC | Stephen Warbeck, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Michael Todd, Ivan Palomares, Gorka Oteiza (mod) | Panel

With industry professionals coming from different branches, the panel will answer many questions about the pros and cons of technology, the difference between then and now, what the future brings, what are the issuses, challenges and solutions of today’s and tomorrow’s film music; with Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck, Emmy Award-nominated composer Rupert Gregson-Williams, ASCAP’s Assistant Vice-President Michael Todd, award-winning composer Ivan Palomares and SoundTrackFest’s founder and director Gorka Oteiza.

11:30h – 12:45h – NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS: INDUSTRY INSIGHTS | Michael Todd, Alfons Karabuda, Gary Marlowe (mod) | Panel

When creativity isn’t enough, you have to find ways to do business. How to start as a composer? How to sell your music? How to swim with the sharks? To answer these questions, we give you the kindest sharks from the industry: Michael Todd (ASCAP) and Alfons Karabuda (ECSA), moderated by Gary Marlowe.

 

13:00h – 14:00h – WORKING WITH LEGENDS: FROM JERRY GOLDSMITH TO HANS ZIMMER | Robert Townson | Panel

The most prolific soundtrack producer in the world, the Vice-President of Varèse Sarabande, Robert Townson will give insights and experiences of working with the giants of film music, from Jerry Goldsmith, Georges Delerue and John Williams to Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard and many others.

 

14:30h – 15:30h – FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE | Richard Bellis | Master Class

You have to find your own voice. This is a phrase every emerging film composer hears more than once. As a result, a significant amount of head scratching is required just to figure out what, exactly, is meant by it and, equally perplexing, How do I accomplish it? Like other cliché phrases, this one rolls off the tongues of studio execs and composer agents. Just another WTF moment in the educational life of an aspiring media composer.

As you can see, the festival offers a very complete program that includes conferences, panels, master classes, awards ceremony, a concert, and even film and documentary screenings.

 

As it usually happens, the organization warns that the program is subject to last minute unexpected changes. On the other hand, some new guests are also going to be added to the festival in the following weeks, and they will be properly announced in SoundTrackFest when they’re officially confirmed.
