Joe Hisaishi with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – February 2020
Japanese composer and pianist Joe Hisaishi will conduct the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – MSO in three special concerts on February/March 2020.
The first one, entitled ‘Joe Hisaishi in Concert’, will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 @ 19:30h at the Hamer Hall of the Arts Centre Melbourne in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia), to celebrate Hisaishi and his contributions to contemporary symphonic repertoire.
Outside of his work with legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, Hisaishi has released nearly 40 solo albums that have showcased a keen and ever-evolving passion for his art, becoming one of the most important composers of our time. In this concert, Joe Hisaishi will conduct the MSO in a performance of his orchestral works, including Symphonic Fantasy, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and the Australian premiere of The East Land Symphony. This concert will not include visual excerpts from films.

The second and third concerts, entitled ‘Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki’, will be held on Saturday, February 29 @ 19:30h and Sunday, March 1 @ 19:30h, at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia).
There, Joe Hisaishi will conduct the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the MSO Chorus through the magical scores and heart-stirring montages from renowned films by Hayao Miyazaki, including Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, that will be shown on a huge screen at the Bowl. The concerts will be complete with a full children’s choir and a marching band, bringing the ground-breaking films to life on stage.
These two concerts are presented by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Arts Centre Melbourne for Asia TOPA.
