Hollywood Music Workshop 2017

The 9th edition of film scoring summer academy Hollywood Music Workshop is being held these days in Baden (Austria), and is comprised of nine different masterclasses over a period of seven weeks that can be attended individually or as a whole, given by an amazing line-up of top Hollywood composers, orchestrators and arrangers.

 

The workshop, held daily from 9am-12am and 2pm-5pm, will cover from composing, orchestration and arrangement through recording with a real orchestra on the new world class Synchron Stage Vienna and final mixing. This way, participants will learn the entire film scoring process gaining real-world knowledge delivered by some of Hollywood’s best.

 

The workshop schedule is as follows:

July 12 – 14: Cris Velasco – Video Games – Learn how to compose for video games, with advanced techniques of writing music for this genre from Cris Velasco, multiple award-winning composer of epic orchestral, dark experimental and modern hybrid music scores for video games, film and television.

July 15 – 17: Miriam Cutler – Scoring for Documentaries and Independent Films – Will include inside information and tips to score for documentaries from Sundance to the Academy Awards, exploring the director/ Composer relationship. Emmy nominated composer, Miriam Cutler has scored over 100 projects in film and television and is a member of The Academy of Motion Pictures and mentor at Sundance Institute.

July 19 – 21: T.J. Lindgren – Creating Midi-Mockups – Composer and arranger T.J. Lindgren who has worked on projects ranging from small independent films to Hollywood blockbusters and Oscar-nominated scores, will teach students how to use sample libraries and sound processing tools to create a realistic orchestral sound out of the digital audio workstation (DAW) software.

July 22 – 24: Johannes Vogel – Conducting for Modern Film-Scoring – Mentored by Johannes Vogel, principal conductor at the Vienna Synchron Stage, this workshop focuses on the tools needed for a composer to conduct his own music, helping to get in touch with the basics of leading recording-sessions with a symphony orchestra.

July 26 – 30: Joe Kraemer – From Concept to Composition – Learn the conceptual and composing aspects of creating music for film and what is needed to get a composition recorded. Classes will include Joe Kraemer’s tips and behind-the-scenes looks at the scoring of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Jack Reacher.

August 1 – 7: Conrad Pope & Nan Schwartz – Orchestration and Arranging – Learn all the techniques behind orchestrating and arranging a piece from one of the best orchestrators in Hollywood, Conrad Pope, and Grammy Award winning arranger Nan Schwartz.

August 9 – 14: Recording at the Synchron Stage in Vienna – In this workshop Joe Kraemer will guide the students through the recording process with assistance from the booth from renowned composer and orchestrator Conrad Pope. The music of the participants will be recorded professionally, using state of the art equipment at the Synchron Stage in Vienna, performed by a 50 piece professional orchestra.

Complementary two workshops, focused on acting, are July 17 – 19: Heiko Obermöller – Uncovering Human Behaviour: Emotional Storytelling, a Voiceover Masterclass and July 28 – 30: Christoph Dostal – On Camera Acting Techniques and Scene Study.
