5th edition of the Ciné-Notes festival dedicated to ‘French Cinema’

After a successful 4th edition in 2022 (read summary article), the Ciné-Notes festival is back with a new edition to be held from 20 to 31 March 2023 in Bordeaux, France, under the auspices of the Opéra National de Bordeaux.

 

This 5th edition, entitled ‘CINÉMA FRANÇAIS’ and focusing on the great directors and composers of French cinema, will dedicate its main symphonic concerts to two-time Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, who will take up the baton to conduct his music in Bordeaux.

The festival, which will kick off with a piano recital by the renowned Steinway artist Jean-Michel Bernard, will have the following program:

Monday 20/3/2023 – 20:00h – Jean-Michel Bernard – Piano Recital

Jean-Michel Bernard, film music composer and virtuoso pianist, arranger and conductor of Ray Charles, collaborator of Ennio Morricone and Lalo Schiffrin, offers us a journey through the most beautiful film music of French cinema with a piano recital at the Auditorium of Bordeaux.

 

From Borsalino to Amélie Poulain and Les Choses de la Vie, Bernard will take us on a personal and captivating journey through the great themes of Michel Legrand, Georges Delerue, Claude Bolling, Francis Lai, Philippe Sarde… among others.

Tuesday 21/2/2023 – 20:30h – Fred Pallem et le Sacre du Tympan play François de Roubaix

The prolific conductor and bassist Fred Pallem, accompanied by his variable geometry orchestra Sacre du Tympan, will take us on a unique sound session to (re)discover the genius of François de Roubaix, this minstrel of sound known for his film scores such as La Scoumoune, Le Samourai, and the Chapi Chapo series.

 

The concert will be held at Le Rocher de Palmer in Cenon, in a co-production between Le Rocher de Palmer and the Bordeaux National Opera.

Thursday 23 & Friday 24/3/2023 – 20:00h – Alexandre Desplat

On Thursday 23 and Friday 24 March, the public will be able to enjoy two symphonic concerts with the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine conducted by Alexandre Desplat at the Auditorium of Bordeaux.

 

Winner of the most prestigious international awards (2 Oscars, 3 Césars, 2 Golden Globes, 2 Grammys, etc.), the composer Alexandre Desplat will conduct the music he has written for the films of Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Jacques Audiard (Un héros très discret), Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Jonathan Glazer (Birth), Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I & II), Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring), Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) & Roman Polanski (The Ghost Writer).

 

The concert will also include the world premiere of a suite from Pinocchio (Gullermo del Toro).

Symphonic concerts at the Auditorium of Bordeaux with the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine conducted by Bruno Fontaine, who arranged the pieces.

 

Conceived by Bertrand Tavernier and Stéphane Lerouge, this program traces the history of French film music: Jean-Jacques Grünenwald (La Vérité sur bébé Donge), Maurice Jaubert (14 Juillet), Joseph Kosma (Les Portes de la nuit, La Grande Illusion), Michel Legrand (Rafles sur la ville), Michel Magne (Hymne à l’argent), Paul Misraki (Mr Arkadin), Georges Van Parys (French-can, Madame de…), Jean Wiener (Touchez pas au grisbi), & others.
