Soundtrack_Zurich 2021 – 2nd edition – Program, guests & concerts

SoundTrack_Zurich will celebrate its 2nd edition from September 28 to October 1, 2021, during the Zurich Film Festival (23/9 – 3/10/21), and has announced its program, guests, and concerts.

 

Guest of honor is Mychael Danna (Academy Award for ‘Life of Pi’), who will receive the Career Achievement Award at the 17th Zurich Film Festival. Other renowned composers include Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka (‘Monte Veritá’), Anne-Sophie Versnaeyen (‘OSS 117: Alerte rouge en Afrique Noire’), Lele Marchitelli (‘The Young Pope’/’The New Pope’), Dominik Scherrer (‘The Serpent’) and Diego Baldenweg with Nora Baldenweg & Lionel Baldenweg.

The festival will also celebrate two concerts: International Film Music Competition 2021 on Thursday, September 30, and tonhalleLATE on Friday, October 1.

Wednesday, September 29, 2021

 

  • 10:00 – 13:00 h – Strike A Score: Practical tips for the promotion of your original score. Hands-On Workshop for film composers: PR, homepage, CV, pitching, social media, festivals, working with agencies. With: Valerie Dobbelaere.

 

  • 15:00-16:00 h – Film Composer Talk with Diego Baldenweg with Nora Baldenweg & Lionel Baldenweg. Diego Baldenweg with Nora Baldenweg & Lionel Baldenweg, also known as GREAT GARBO, are a multi-award-winning composer team. The three Swiss/Australian siblings have composed scores for over 20 films and music for over 300 international TV campaigns. Host: Basil Böhni.

 

  • 16:30-17:30 h – Film Composer Talk with Mychael Danna. Canadian composer Mychael Danna has scored more than 100 movies and series and received numerous awards – including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and an Emmy for the soundtrack to Ang Lee’s masterpiece ‘Life of Pi’ (2012). Mychael Danna will talk about his scores on this panel, open to the general public. Host: Vasco Hexel.

 

  • 21:00-23:00h – Movie ‘PRINZESSIN’, with composer Martin Skaskly making comments live on his music during the screening.

 

Thursday, September 30, 2021

  • 10:00-11:30 h – Film Composer Talk with Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka. He has imbued numerous productions, from cinema to series, with his special brand of empathetic and suspenseful sound. His musical range can be heard in very different projects. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Garth Davis’ drama ‘Lion’ (2016), which score was co-written with composer Dustin O’Halloran. Host: Vasco Hexel.

 

  • 12:00-13:00 h – THE SERPENT (Netflix) – Case Study with Dominik Scherrer. In the past, London-based Swiss composer Dominik Scherrer has written award-winning music for some of the finest film and TV series. He received his first Ivor Novello Award for the soundtrack to ‘Ripper Street’ in 2014 and won a second one for his music to the drama series ‘Requiem’, which he composed together with Natsha Khan aka Bat for Lashes. With the Netflix hit ‘The Serpent’ (2021) he scored his biggest success to date. Host: Diego Baldenweg.

 

  • 12:00-13:00 h – THE YOUNG POPE, THE NEW POPE (Sky Atlantic, HBO, Canal+) – Case Study with Lele Marchitelli. He has worked with renowned directors like Giuseppe Piccioni, Maurizio Sciarra or Francesco Bruni, but among his best-known collaborations is his work with the award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino. This year, Sorrentino will receive the ‘A Tribute to…Award’ which is the prestigious honorary award of the Zurich Film Festival. This panel, open to both industry and the general public, will present a case study with Lele Marchitelli about these two series. Host: Hanna Sophie Lüke.

 

  • 16:30-17:30h – OSS 117: Alerte Rouge en Afrique Noire – Case Study with Anne-Sophie Versnaeyen. Alerte rouge en Afrique Noire’ celebrated its premiere as the closing film at the Cannes Film Festival. Anne-Sophie Versnaeyen, who has written the score, will talk about the spy parody in this panel, presented in cooperation with SWAN (Swiss Women’s Audiovisual Network), WIFT (Women in Film and Television) and AWFC (Alliance for Women Film Composers). Host: Adina Friisy.

 

  • 19:00-22:00 h – International Film Music Competition 2021 – Concert [More details below]

 

Friday, October 1, 2021

  • 10:00-12:00 h – Monte Verità – Case Study. The Swiss drama ‘Monté Veritá’ (2021) premiered at a major film festival: Locarno – whose piazza is only a few kilometers away from the ‘Mountain of Truth’ where the film’s story is set. Composer Volker BertelmannHauschka, director Stefan Jäger (i.a. ‘Big and Little’), sound designer and re-recording mixer Gina Keller (Swiss Film Award for ‘Best Sound’ for ‘My Little Sister’), sound engineer Reto Stamm, and editor Noemi Preiswerk will talk about their joint work on the historical drama on this panel.  Due to current Covid-19 restrictions the number of seats is limited. INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC COMPETITION 2021 – CONCERT

A very special concert to be celebrated on Thursday, 30/9/2021 from 19:00-22:00h at the Tonhalle Zürich, performed by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under the baton of Frank Strobel and hosted by Sandra Studer, to celebrate the 9th International Film Music Competition of the ZFF.

The first part will host the new compositions (world-premiered) for David Vergés’ short film ETIQUETA NEGRA from the three nominees: Julien Bellanger (France), John Heins (USA), Andrey Mordovsky (Russia). On the same evening, the winner will be chosen by the jury and awarded the Golden Eye ‘Best International Film Music 2021’ endowed with CHF 10.000 (9.191€).

 

Mychael Danna, who presides the jury of the 9th IFMC, will also be present at the Award Ceremony having his music performed and receiving the Career Achievement Award of the Zurich Film Festival

 

During the ceremony, the sibling trio Diego Baldenweg with Nora Baldenweg and Lionel Baldenweg will be honored with a film music medley of some of their orchestral works, including the world premiere of the new Zurich Film Festival Suite ‘Eye to the World’.
