Soundtrack_Zurich 2024 – 5th edition – Guests, program & concerts

This weekend starts the 5th edition of SoundTrack_Zurich (4-6.10.2024), the Swiss conference on film music and media music, featuring almost 70 speakers and 30 case studies, workshops, talks, networking activities, concerts, and film screenings, aiming to empower the intersection between the music and the film, TV and video game industries.

DESCRIPTION

SoundTrack_Zurich 05 is the three-day professional event on film and media music held as part of the Zurich Film Festival – ZFF 2024 (3-13.10.2024). The conference offers a series of panels, networking sessions, case studies and workshops that address current issues in today’s film and media music scene. Another important element is the networking of film composers with the international guests of the Zurich Film Festival.

 

SoundTrack_Zurich is organised by Forum Filmmusik, curated by Michael P. Aust (SoundTrack_Cologne) in collaboration with Zurich Film Festival (ZFF), Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich, ZHdK (Zurich University of Arts), SoundTrack_Cologne, and SONART (Musikschaffende Schweiz).

The Zurich Film Festival will honor three-time Academy Award winner Howard Shore with the Career Achievement Award for his life’s work. The Canadian composer is best known for his music for the film trilogies LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT, for which he won multiple Academy Awards for Best Original Score. In Zurich, he will preside over the jury of the 12th International Film Music Competition. The award will be presented to him on October 5, 2024, during the «Cinema in Concert» gala at Tonhalle Zürich.

tonhalleLATE – Classic meets electronic (Fri 4/10/2024 – 22h)

Description:

tonhalleLATE is the internationally renowned and mostly sold-out concert and party series organised by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. The Zurich Film Festival is underway and this edition of our tonhalleLATE is also called: Cinema in Concert.

In the first part of the evening, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, conducted by film music expert Frank Strobel, will play excerpts from film scores by Howard Shore. Parts of the films can be experienced on a large screen in the Great Tonhalle Zurich. Sandra Studer will guide you through the film music concert.
The second part will feature the legendary fusion of classical and electronic music: musicians from the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich will meet the electronic live duo Kon Faber. The duo from Berlin is internationally renowned and will ensure a long night on the dance floor.

THE PEASANTS Multimedia Concert by L.U.C. & Rebel Babel Film Orchestra (6/10/2024 – 17h)

A unique music and video performance based on the feature film THE PEASANTS, Poland’s Oscar contender for 2024:

The eight-piece Rebel Babel Film Orchestra (RBFO), along with a VJ, conducted by the film’s composer Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski, will close this year’s SoundTrack_Zurich on Sunday, October 6th.

This multimedia spectacle, co-financed by the Polish National Foundation (Polska Fundacja Narodowa), combines painted visuals with the film’s remarkable music. It showcases Polish folk music on a global stage stemming from the tribes of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland), Małopolska (Lesser Poland), Mazury (Masuria), and Sieradz-Łęczyca, regions known for their distinct cultural heritage.

12TH INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC COMPETITION

The 12th International Film Music Competition will take place during the 20th Zurich Film Festival (3–13 October 2024) and is organised by Zurich Film Festival, Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG, and Forum Filmmusik. Participants are invited to score the 8‑minute short film THE FLYING SAILOR by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby for symphony orchestra.

 

An international expert jury will choose three compositions from all the submissions. These three compositions will be world-premiered by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under the baton of Frank Strobel during a film music concert in the Tonhalle Zurich on 5 October 2024. On the same evening, the winner will be chosen by the jury and awarded the Golden Eye “Best International Film Music 2024” endowed with CHF 10 000.
