Princess of Asturias Awards 2020 – Ennio Morricone & John Williams – Events

The Princess of Asturias Foundation has published the program of cultural activities, on the occasion of the 14th edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards, where among other celebrities, the legendary composers Ennio Morricone and John Williams will be honored.

A total of 29 events, to be held between 8 and 17 October at the La Vega Arms Factory, in Oviedo (Spain) adapted to the special health circumstances of the moment, adjusting their formats and capacity, also combining in-person with the virtual events.


Below is a list of the film music concerts:

Friday 9 – 21:30h & Sunday 11/10/2020 – 13:30h – Morricone Pop

A concert conducted by musician and producer Miguel Herrero based on some of the themes composed or arranged by Ennio Morricone for pop music artists in the 1960s and 1970s.


Saturday 10 – 21:30h & Sunday 11/10/2020 – 22:30h – Williams Club

Musician Jacobo de Miguel will conduct this jazz concert that aims to review some outstanding pieces by John Williams, joint 2020 Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts, containing influences from this genre.


Monday 12, Tuesday 13 & Wednesday 14/10/2020 – 20:00h – Chamber Morricone & Williams

A concert performed by the Enol Ensemble. The repertoire will include musical pieces composed by the joint recipients the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts adapted for a chamber ensemble.


Thursday 15/10/2020 – 20:00h – Concierto Sinfónico – Ennio Morricone / John Williams

A concert conducted by Andrea Morricone and Óliver Díaz, in which the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) will perform works by the composers jointly conferred with the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. These composers’ works include some of the most iconic musical compositions of the silver screen. The repertoire will include compositions by Ennio Morricone such as “The Ecstasy of Gold” from the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and “Gabriel’s Oboe” from The Mission, which will be conducted by his son Andrea; as well as the main themes of the films Jaws and Star Wars, by John Williams, which will be performed under the baton of Óliver Díaz. The concert will feature the participation of violinist Jesús Reina.
